My father was a bonafide fitness freak. He would get up at 4:30am to go to the gym then call me almost after every workout just to let me know what he worked on, how he felt, etc. The cool part of that is he didn't start working out until he was in his 60's. Although he passed away 5 years ago at the age of 76, he still made me so proud that he loved the gym. The truth is, it is never to late to start your health and fitness lifestyle. Research has shown that even moderate exercise for those over 50 years old gives as much protection from disease as an extensive exercise routine provides to younger people. Studies also show that after the age of 40, we lose an average of 8% of our muscle mass every 10 years. That process will slow down with resistance and cardiovascular training. Personally, I'm a firm believer in people (men and women) over 50 years old being able to create lean muscle tissue. I have had clients, with a consistent workout program, see an increase in lean muscle tissue and a decrease in body-fat over a period of time. It is possible. Starting slow is the key. Start with 20-30 minutes of light cardio (taking a walk for example). Increase with some resistance training 1-to-2 times per week, using bands for example. Consult with a personal trainer for other options.

Here are 5 other reasons why working out over 60 years old is important:
1. It can increase your energy level
2. It can help your brain health and memory
3. It can help with relaxation and sleep quality
4. It can reduce pain
5. It can make you feel happier
The bottom line is that exercising at any age is important for a better quality of life. Consistency is the most important thing. Find something and stick with it. Go for a walk, lift some weights, and don't forget to watch what you eat!
