Please, before I move forward with this blog, answer one question for me. Why is it so damn hard for people to drink water? Let me clarify, I don't mean that the content within the glass (water) is heavy, or uncomfortable to hold. I mean people physically will not drink it! I have had clients tell me, "I haven't been thirsty all weekend, so I didn't have any water." I've also had people say, "I had coffee, tea and orange juice, isn't that the same?" The best out of all of them is, "I pee way to much to drink water, so I choose not too." I cannot stress enough the importance of water. There is a debate about it, but the body is made up of between 65-73% water! Let that sink in...I'll wait. On second thought, let me repeat that, the body is made up of between 65-73% water. In saying that, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know that depleting your body of this essential mineral will, in fact, make everything within your body not function correctly.
The human body uses water for its cells, organs, tissues, hair, nails, eyeballs, and everything else in between! It's not an option, it's a requirement! Water also protects the spinal cord, joints, tissues, blood, bones, and the brain. It does this by keeping everything moist and acting as a lubricant. Water aids in digestion, and in the breaking down of soluble fiber. We as humans lose fluids everyday. We can lose it from just sitting down watching television, working, and let us never forget, by EXERCISING! As we lose we need to replenish, all of the time. Failure to replenish will, of course, lead to dehydration. Dehydration can cause another set of issues for you. In terms of dehydration, you can be dehydrated and not feel thirsty. On the Mayo Clinic's website, specifically: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dehydration/symptoms-causes/syc-20354086 It identifies some of the symptoms of dehydration as:
-Less frequent urination
-Dark-color urination
-Fatigue
-Dizziness
-Confusion
Those are just a few. We know people can have these and/or other symptoms based off of a lot of other factors, such as age, gender, and genes. I found this cool chart on http://crystalclearwater.co.za/facts.php that gives a visual of what water actually does for you:
During consultations with my clients and/or potential clients I always say that water, "Is the battery that runs the whole game." What this means is, you can workout right; you can eat the right macro-nutrients, but if your water isn't where it needs to be, you're just wasting time.
Water is a needed and is essential for your everyday living. I feel that the average human needs about 100 ounces of water per day. If you exercise, even moderately, you need even more! Please don't be confused and assume that just because it's a liquid like pop, tea, coffee, or juice it's water. Water is water! So drink up, enjoy, feel good, and be consistent at it!
